King Card Game

The King card game, popular in Russia, gained popularity during the Soviet era and became a staple of social gatherings and family get-togethers. The game is played by four players, each aiming to accumulate the highest number of points throughout the rounds. It requires strategic decision-making, as players must weigh their options and choose the most advantageous cards to play.

The gameplay involves players taking turns in leading a card from their hand, with subsequent players following suit if possible or playing any other card if they don’t have a matching suit. Observing opponents' moves and trying to outsmart them becomes a crucial aspect of the King game. Players must carefully manage their cards, deciding when to play strong cards to win tricks and when to strategically use weaker cards to avoid accumulating points.

The King game provides an enjoyable and challenging experience for its participants. It remains a popular card game in Russia, cherished for its simplicity and excitement.

Players and Cards

There are four active players. A 32-card pack is used (which includes “7”, “8”, “9”, “10”, “Jack”, “Queen”, “King” and “Ace” cards).

The game consists of two stages: in the first stage, players accumulate penalty points, and in the second stage, they play to reduce those points. Each stage includes multiple deals. The first player is chosen by drawing lots; in each subsequent round, the first turn goes to the next player in order.

Penalty Stage

In this stage, players must take any tricks or tricks that include specific cards for which penalty points are awarded. Players must play in the suit. If they do not have the required suit, they can play any card. There are no trumps.

Below are the game rounds listed in the order they appear in the game:

  • No Tricks
    16
The objective is to avoid taking any tricks. For example, the first player leads with a heart, and the other players must play any heart they have. If a player does not have a heart, they can play a card of any suit. The player who plays the highest card of the led suit takes the trick and incurs a penalty of 2 points per trick.
  • No Hearts
    16
The goal is to avoid taking any tricks with hearts in them. Each heart card taken incurs a penalty of 2 points. Playing hearts when other suits are available is not allowed.
  • No Boys
    16
A penalty of 4 points is incurred for each Jack or King taken in a trick.
  • No Girls
    16
A penalty of 8 points is incurred for each Queen taken.
  • No King
    16
Players are not allowed to play heart cards if they have cards of another suit. Taking the King of hearts incurs a penalty of 16 points.
  • No Last Two Tricks
    16
A penalty of -8 points is incurred for each of the last 2 tricks.
  • Nothing
    96
This round includes a combination of all the previously mentioned rounds, and the total points for this round are 240.

Sum of all negative points is 192.

Playing Back

At this stage, players have the opportunity to redeem themselves by offsetting the negative points they have accumulated with positive ones. Everything that was not allowed to be taken in the penalty round must be taken at the redemption stage. Take all the tricks, take the hearts, take the boys, take the girls, and so on.

Tallying of Scores

After completing all the specified stages of the game, the sum of all the negative and positive points accumulated by the players is entered into the final table. The difference between the negative and positive scores is the result of each player in the match.

The winner is the one who has accumulated the highest number of points in the game.
